I have a client right now who is living this truth.

He took on a client that wasn’t ideal, and he knew it from the beginning. The result? His stress levels have skyrocketed. There’s been conflict within his team. He told me, “I hear her voice in my sleep and wake up in a panic.”

What’s worse—it’s not just affecting his sleep. It’s made him question the work he’s doing. He’s fallen out of love with it, at least for now. One decision to work with the wrong client has clouded the joy of an entire career.

And that’s the part most people underestimate. Saying yes to the wrong people doesn’t just cause stress in the moment—it can make you want to blow up your entire business. It can make you doubt your purpose, your passion, and even your future.

We tell ourselves it’s safer to say yes. Safer to take the money. Safer to do the project even when something in our gut says no. But let’s be honest: it’s also incredibly costly. It’s costly to your energy. Costly to your creativity. Costly to your team. And most of all, costly to your love for the work itself.

That’s why it’s crucial to pause and gather all the facts before saying yes out of fear. Both paths are hard—it’s hard to worry about paying the bills, and it’s hard to work with a client who chips away at your energy and joy. But when you see the full cost of saying yes to the wrong client, you realize just how important it is to choose wisely.

One yes can change everything. And not always for the better. So let this be a reminder: Your energy is sacred. Use it on people who bring out your best, not those who make you question your worth.
